Introducing the New Faculty Learning Community: Alternative Grading, AI and Relationality
Imagine co-creating a space with your colleagues that is free from judgement and centres trust as a core value!
As we shift into September, we at the CTE want to welcome you back to your learning spaces – wherever those may be- and appreciate your relentless commitment to supporting our students during what is being called a polycrisis in higher education. We are also closing in on four years after Gen AI made its contentious appearance in our classrooms, forcing us to once again “pivot” to alternative ways of teaching and assessing our students.
Sigh…..
And yet, through it all, we continue to witness the hard work of faculty who are navigating this sea of uncertainty in education with care, compassion, and deep curiosity.
We also want to say: “You do not have to do this alone!”
In our upcoming faculty learning community (FLC), Alternative Grading, AI & Relational Integrity, we will gather to talk about our own experiences, reflect on our values regarding assessment, learn about how our colleagues are negotiating this complex time, and apply these ideas in our classrooms. We will visit resources like the recent MIT report which emphasizes the human and social aspects of learning and highlights the need for alternative ways of grading.
This FLC is about co-creating a space that is free from judgement and centres trust as a core value. Our goal is to support one another to design and implement meaningful and thoughtful learning assessments that may reimagine grading and lift up the relational aspects of teaching and learning.
We also acknowledge that we are all on different journeys when it comes to our feelings and values connected to AI and assessment. We will seek to honour each other’s experiences, appreciating that we are learning (and unlearning) alongside one another and our students.
