The language below is provided as samples and starting points. We recommend that you make your own determinations, in consultation with your department, and adjust the language as needed.
When Generative AI is not permitted
Sample A:
As your instructor, I want to ensure that you develop your own skills, knowledge, and voice. Therefore, the use of any generative AI tool to complete or assist with any assignment or assessment in this course is not permitted and will be considered academic misconduct according to the University’s Academic Integrity Policy.
Sample B:
To maintain fairness and integrity in our course, I do not allow generative AI tools in any assignments unless I explicitly authorize their use. This includes ChatGPT and all other Generative AI tools and programs.
Sample C:
I want you to succeed through your own efforts. Using Generative AI tools to complete coursework in this course is prohibited under all circumstances. Such use is considered an unauthorized method for completing examinations or assignments and will be treated as academic misconduct according to the University’s Academic Integrity Policy.
When Generative AI is permitted
Note: It is recommended that faculty consult with the Cap U Library Guide to AI citations (individual links follow) in in APA, and in MLA formats.
Sample A:
As your instructor, I encourage you to use artificial intelligence tools, including Generative AI, to gather information, review concepts, or assist in producing assignments. However, you are ultimately responsible for the work you submit, and any content generated or supported by Generative AI tools must be cited appropriately. Please note that Generative AI tools are not permitted during midterm exams and final exams in this course.
Sample B:
You may use the following specific AI tools to complete your assignments for this course [list tools]. No other Generative AI tools or technologies are permitted for assessed work. If you have any questions about the use of AI tools or applications for coursework, please feel free to speak with me.
Sample C:
You are allowed to use Generative AI tools for activities such as gathering information or brainstorming, but you are not permitted to use Gen AI tools during any exams or in-class written assessments.
*The use of any technology that is not supported by Cap U must be optional for students. It is always important to offer student alternative options. If faculty choose to integrate ChatGPT or other GenAI tools into course activities, they should consider the ethical and privacy implications of doing so and share these considerations with their students.
