Fall 2025’s BADM 335 – Workplace Learning, Development and Design students are on fire!
I wanted to shake things up this semester, so I teamed up with the BADM 335 students and Noel Genoway on a WIL project to bring my Tourism and Outdoor Recreation teaching and learning activities up to date, refresh my lesson outcomes, and maybe even retire a few old jokes. This collaboration led to some wonderfully current and engaging lesson ideas that were a win for all of us. I learned that they really like Kahoot!
Students designed five different 30 minute lessons on goal setting using SMART and CLEAR goals, how to keep your team on track, and how to use mentorship to create great teams. Each lesson followed the BOPPPS model for instructional design, including interactive and experiential activities, and some evaluation.
Working on this project allowed students to pick up concepts they can use right away in the workplace, while working with a real partner really connected them to the theory of development and design of learning. They could see what goes into creating an engaging learning environment and they had fun doing it. Feedback was really positive, and one student even asked, “Why don’t all instructors do this?”. Well, we can 😉 !
If you’re interested in getting engaged and learning how, we’ll be holding our next Let’s talk WIL session on March 11th (details to come). If you want to start planning right away for an Experiential or Work-Integrated learning project like this in your class, please reach out to wil@capilanou.ca.
