We are pleased and excited to announce that Dr. Johanna Sam, Tŝilhqot’in Nation, will be our second keynote in-person on Thursday, April 25th at 9:30am in LB321/322 for the 2024 Capilano University Teaching and Learning Symposium.

The title of the keynote is Inclusive Spaces: Fostering Belonging and Diversity in the Digital Age  

Keynote Description 

This keynote delves into the intersection of social-emotional learning (SEL), diversity, and technology in educational settings. With a focus on creating inclusive spaces, we will explore strategies for nurturing care, belonging, and diversity in learning spaces. Participants will gain insights into the challenges educators face in promoting SEL and inclusivity, while also receiving practical guidance on how to overcome these obstacles and create inclusive learning environments for all students. 

At the end of this keynote, participants will be able to: 

  1. Apply strategies for fostering inclusive learning environments that prioritize a sense of belonging and diversity, utilizing both social-emotional learning principles and technological tools effectively. 
  2. Reflect on the challenges faced by educators in promoting social-emotional learning and inclusivity. 
  3. Navigate these challenges to create more inclusive spaces for all learners. 

About Johanna Sam 

Hunelhyad? Sid Dr. Johanna Sam sets’edinh. Sid Tŝilhqot’in xaghiyah. Sid Musqueam nen ŝidah as. My name is Dr. Johanna Sam. I am a proud citizen of Tŝilhqot’in Nation. I currently live and work on the traditional lands of the Musqueam People. I am a Michael Smith Health Research BC Scholar and Assistant Professor in the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Education in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education as well as NITEP – Indigenous Teacher Education Program. I led the Yatu Lab, which is rooted in the seasons of life focused on childhood to early adulthood. My training is in developmental and educational psychology from a public health approach to develop upstream and downstream wellness supports. I am interested in Indigenous knowledges to promote holistic wellness among children and adolescents, especially in a digital world.
