Seeing the Possible in our Teaching – Pursuing Opportunities for Improvement and Innovation

Higher Education is at an important and transformational inflection point in Canada and around the world. Higher education institutions everywhere are facing challenges of enrolment, technological change (particularly arising from generative AI), the need to differentiate and innovate, and changing expectations from students, employers, and government. This interactive session will focus on how we collectively see the possible in our teaching at Capilano University. Through facilitated dialogue, participants will explore opportunities (and barriers) for improvement and innovation in our individual classrooms and across our academic programs, with a specific focus on moving from ideas to action to improve the student experience.

Dr. James Honan
Harvard University
James P. Honan has served on the faculty at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) since 1991. He is also a faculty member at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS), an affiliate faculty member with the Center for Public Leadership (CPL) at HKS, and a member of the Faculty Executive Committee of the Advanced Leadership Initiative (ALI) at Harvard University. He is Educational Co-Chair of the Institute for Educational Management (IEM) at HGSE and Faculty Chair of Nonprofit Leadership and Management: Strategies for Organizational Success (NPLM) and Nonprofit Financial Stewardship (NFS) at HKS. An experienced educator and facilitator, James serves as a core faculty member in HGSE’s Online Master’s in Education Leadership (OEL) program. An author of numerous publications, he is widely recognized for his expertise and experience in higher education leadership and governance. James received the Fussa Distinguished Teaching Award from the Harvard University Extension School in 1995. He holds a B.A. from Marist University (NY), an M.A. and Ed.S. in Higher Education from George Washington University (DC), and an Ed.M. and Ed.D. in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy from Harvard University.
