Do you ever avoid sensitive topics or downplay conflict in the classroom for fear of doing more harm than good? Perhaps you are tired of polarized classroom debates where “winning” the argument seems more important than learning. Or perhaps you, like many other instructors, feel paralyzed in the moment when micro or macro aggressions occur?
This 3-hour workshop focuses on classroom facilitation techniques for instructors to navigate difficult conversations and “hot moments” more confidently in the classroom. Participants will practice skills for addressing micro and macro aggression and for facilitating conversations on sensitive topics. Emphasis will be on concrete tools for creating spaces where difficult conversations can occur constructively while fostering meaningful and inclusive learning experiences for all students. Expect to engage and challenge yourself in a supportive group of colleagues, and to leave with a deeper awareness, fresh insights, and practical ideas for navigating those “hot” moments.
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Discuss common patterns and power dynamics that can impede group effectiveness and learning in the classroom
- Practice responding effectively to unexpected or challenging situations and tensions
- Identify 2-3 personal strategies for responding to/intervening in difficult conversations or dynamics among students
