Maha Bali Keynote – Wed April 26, 2024
We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Maha Bali will be the opening keynote speaker for the 2024 Symposium on Teaching and Learning at Capilano University on April 24-26, 2024.
The title of the keynote will be Ecosystems that Nurture Socially Just Care in Learning Spaces in the Age of Generative AI.
Keynote Description
In this interactive session, we will discuss the intersections of equity and care, the multidimensional nature of each, and explore ways to enact socially just care in learning spaces. Specific models of compassionate learning design and intentionally equitable hospitality will be shared, and we will explore ways to apply these models with the advent of generative AI. Participants will be invited to reflect on their practices as we explore ways of building community in the classroom and systemic enablers and barriers for pedagogies of care.
I don’t really know everything I have to say, but I’m willing to share my unfinished thoughts with you and I am willing to be criticized for it.

My mentoring is not out of responsibility as something that I have to, I do it with joy because I’m building relationships with people.

About Maha Bali
Maha’s work on compassionate learning design, building intentionally equitable communities, and most recently, open education practices as a framework for responding to generative AI are all influential and important. Maha Bali is a professor of practice at the Center for Learning and Teaching at The American University in Cairo (AUC) and co-founded virtually connecting, a grassroots movement that challenges academic gatekeeping at conferences. She is also a co-facilitator of Equity Unbound; an equity-focused, open, connected intercultural learning curriculum, which has also branched into academic community activities including Continuity with Care, Socially Just Academia, a collaboration with OneHE: Community-building Resources, and MYFest, an innovative three-month professional learning journey.
The title of the keynote will be Ecosystems that Nurture Socially Just Care in Learning Spaces in the Age of Generative AI and will be delivered online on the first day of the Symposium on April 24th.
