We are very excited to announce that the keynote for this year’s CapU Teaching and Learning Symposium will be Indigenous education advocate, Jo Chrona.
Jo is an advocate, consultant and author with a focus on the intersections of Indigenous and anti-racist education, and on the impacts of Indigenous-informed pedagogies and high-expectations relationships. Jo Chrona is Ts’msyen, a member of the Kitsumkalum First Nation in British Columbia. She is Ganhada (Raven) of Waap (House) K’oom. She also has European ancestry. Jo currently lives on Salt Spring Island, traditional territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ (Tsawout) and Quw’utsun. Jo is passionate about creating systemic change in education systems to support truly inclusive, strength-based educational experiences for all learners.
Author of Wayi Wah! Indigenous Pedagogies: An Act for Reconciliation and Anti-Racist Education (2022), Jo’s professional experience includes over 25 years teaching in both K-12 (secondary grades) and post-secondary education, working as a Faculty Associate in Simon Fraser University’s (SFU) Teacher Education Program, an Advisor with the British Columbia (BC) Ministry of Education, and a Policy Analyst then Curriculum Manager, for the First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC) in BC.
Over the past two decades, Jo has been involved in curriculum development and resource writing, professional learning through inquiry networks, and Indigenous education. She participated in aspects of educational transformation in BC’s K-12 system and the development of Indigenous education policies, as well as managed and contributed to the development of authentic Indigenous teacher resources.
The annual CapU Teaching and Learning Symposium brings together faculty, students, staff, Elders and community members to celebrate and reflect as we consider ways to weave relationality, reflection, and innovation into our classrooms as part of CapU’s distinct university experience. This year’s theme invites us to reflect on what it means to be human in our classroom; how we forge deep connections with our students through teaching, learning, community building, and reflective practice.
Join us for the 2025 CapU Teaching and Learning Symposium on April 30th and May 1st, 2025. Stay tuned for more details.
