Capilano University describes the standards of academic integrity as including, but not limited to:

• Independently producing work submitted under your own name;
• Properly and appropriately documenting all work;
• Identifying all collaborators in work;
• Completing examinations without giving or receiving assistance unless assistance is required due to documented accommodation;
• Respecting the integrity of examination materials and/or the examination process.

The problem is likely bigger and more widespread than we think. Results from surveys conducted in the United States between 2002 and 2015 indicate that 68% of undergraduate students admit to cheating on a written assignment or test.[i] Statistics in Canada have not been reported since 2006[ii], 53% of undergraduate students surveyed indicated that they had participated in some sort of serious cheating on written work.[iii]

Cheating, academic dishonesty, or academic misconduct can take many forms. It can include contract cheating, using testbanks, unapproved collaboration, copy/pasting from sources, and visual plagiarism.

As a faculty member you should be familiar with CapU’s policy and procedures for academic integrity.

Prevention is your most powerful tool as an educator. Not only do the tools for prevention promote Academic Integrity, they support the success of all students.

Some things you can do to prevent violations of academic integrity are:

• Create a culture of Academic Integrity by talking to students about it and explicitly teaching citation methods.
• Design assessments with clear, explicit instructions that focus on student learning and do not use publisher test banks.
• Use options on eLearn that support academic integrity
• Educate students on the risks of compromising their integrity – Betting on Integrity
• Require all students to complete the Academic Integrity Module in eLearn
