“Capilano University has a culture of integrity, ethical conduct, and intellectual and academic honesty… Academic integrity is fundamental to the creation, transmission and acquisition of knowledge.”
– Capilano University Academic Integrity Policy
The International Center for Academic Integrity defines academic integrity as a commitment to five fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. We believe that these five values, plus the courage to act on them even in the face of adversity, are truly foundational to the academy. Without them, everything that we do in our capacities as teachers, learners, and researchers loses value and becomes suspect.

What do I need to know as a Faculty member?
Prevention is your most powerful tool as an educator. Not only do the tools for prevention promote Academic Integrity, they support the success of all students.
Some things you can do to prevent violations of academic integrity are:
- Create a culture of Academic Integrity by talking to students about it and explicitly teaching citation methods.
- Design assessments with clear, explicit instructions that focus on student learning and do not use publisher test banks.
- Use options on eLearn that support academic integrity
- Educate students on the risks of compromising their integrity – Betting on Integrity
- Require all students to complete the Academic Integrity Module in eLearn
The response that an instructor should take when they suspect an infraction are detailed in section 8 of the policy and section 2 of the procedures.
