Centre for Teaching Excellence

Bettina is an Educational Developer in the Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE). She also currently teaches cross-cultural business and organizational behaviour in the School of Business and the School of Legal Studies.

As an uninvited guest on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm(Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh(Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples, she is grateful for the Coast Salish Peoples’ stewardship of the land and for their resilience in the face of colonization and adversity. Originally from Denmark, Bettina continues to unlearn and learn from the land and the local Nations, and she is committed to uplifting and centering Indigenous voices in her teaching, facilitation, consultations, and workshops.

Bettina has been with CapU since 2015 and has facilitated workshops and communities of practice with faculty on numerous teaching and learning topics. She has several years’ prior experience as an adult educator and consultant in a variety of non-profit, corporate, and post-secondary institutions. Her work in the CTE focuses on supporting effective learner-centred teaching and learning practices through workshop facilitation and consultations with faculty. She works with faculty on curriculum and lesson planning, active learning strategies, constructive alignment, and alternative assessment strategies such as “ungrading.” 

A facilitator and community builder at heart, Bettina is intrigued by ways to create connections and inclusive communities of inquiry, and a sense of belonging for students as well as instructors. Her favourite part of her job is to engage in dialogue and in “thinking together” with her teaching colleagues and supporting and inspiring them to be their authentic best selves in the classroom whether online or in person.

When teaching, Bettina combines her knowledge of teaching and learning with her previous experience in international business, program management, leadership, team and organizational development in North America, Asia, and Europe. She is a passionate and committed instructor and educator, who sees herself on a continuous learning journey of creating, refining, reflecting, and improving to create space and to design activities and assignments that engage ALL student in meaningful and experiential learning experiences with each other and with the course.

Outside of CapU, Bettina can often be found in the local mountains in hiking shoes or on her bike. Or more recently, willingly, or unwillingly as private chauffeur for her two wonderful and too fast-growing daughters.

Bettina holds an MA in Adult Education from the University of Toronto, an B.Sc. in International Business Administration from Copenhagen Business School and is a certified ISW facilitator and a skilled instructional designer (online, blended and in-person).
